Class Description: This is a weekend class designed for students interested in faceplate turning. Faceplate turning is when the mounted piece of wood is only attached to the lathe at the Headstock end of the lathe. Faceplate turning usually produces bowls but could include plates, platters, etc. This class is for the beginning woodturner or a student wanting to expand their skills, improve their turning skills and learn new techniques.
The Saturday class will turn a bowl that is attached to the lathe using the Glue Block method and create a Jam Chuck to finish the bottom of the bowl. The Sunday class will turn a bowl using a Four Jaw Chuck for the interior and exterior of the piece, then the class will create a Mandrell Chuck for finishing the bottom of the bowl.
Skill Development:
- Saturday – Faceplate + Jam Chucks
- Mounting a bowl blank and glue block the lathe using a Faceplate
- Using a Bowl Gouge, Parting Tool, Bowl Scraper
- Turning the exterior and the interior of the bowl
- Sanding and finishing by hand on the Lathe
- Power Sanding and finishing on the Lathe
- Making a Jam Chuck
- Finishing the bottom of the bowl
- Sunday – Four Jaw + Mandrell Chucks
- Mounting a bowl blank using a Four Jaw Chuck
- Using a Bowl Gouge, Parting Tool, Bowl Scraper
- Turning the exterior and making a Tenon for the Four Jaw Chuck
- Turning the interior of the bowl with consistent wall thickness
- Sanding and finishing by hand on the Lathe
- Power Sanding and finishing on the Lathe
- Making a Mandrell Chuck
- Finishing the bottom of the Bowl
