Class Description: This class will provide an introduction to CNC routers and teach the fundamentals of CAD/CAM software using a popular package, VCarve Pro. VCarve is one of the most popular programs for Woodworkers using CNC routers. We will learn the basics of VCarve to create shapes and text, then manipulate these objects to design a project. We’ll discuss the tools (router bits) to accomplish different tasks. And create “toolpaths” to follow lines, cut out areas, and engrave your project. Sample pieces are lavishly used to illustrate concepts.
You will create your own wooden sign which you will carve on one of the CNC machines at CU Woodshop Supply.
You must be comfortable working with Windows PC’s and using a computer mouse. Experience with design, graphics, or photo editing software is helpful.
There will be 9 hours of classroom work in three 3-hour sessions. Following the last session, you will arrange a time to use our CNC at CU Woodshop to complete your project on a cherry board. We try to schedule the shop visit 2 students at a time. Allow about 2 hours for this final meeting.
Class Size: 3 – 8 students
