Class Description: In this CNC Mini-Class, we will dig into the tools (bits) you use with your CNC router. We will review the bits, when to use which bits, and learn about optimal “feeds and speeds” for cutting. We examine the Vectric tool library: how to modify existing tools, add tools, add custom tools, and how to increase cutting precision. We focus on the VCarve Version 9 and Version 8 software which are still in common use. (Version 10, available as of Sep 11, 2019, adds some new features but is compatible with previous versions.)
There are several tool path functions that affect quality of cut and we’ll look at these as well.
Related to discussion of the tools, though not specific to VCarve, we will also discuss materials you can cut, and some fun techniques for better finished projects.
All CNC Saturday mini-classes are in demonstration/discussion/question format. There will be handout notes covering the material. You may bring your own laptop with Vectric software installed if you would like, but it is not required. Each class is intended to be stand-alone, so you may sign up for only the classes that interest you.
Pre-registration is strongly recommended. You will be notified the day before the class if it is cancelled due to insufficient registration. Prior-student discounts can only be offered for pre-registration. If the class is offered, anyone may register and attend on the day of the class.
